The Double Take Empty The Double Take

Post by Oraklon Afjak Sat Nov 15, 2014 2:39 am

We've all had moments like this: we think a card is garbage when we first see it, then later on realize that it has a lot of hidden potential. Here's one very simple of mine to start off.

    The Double Take Garv_Card

I've been preaching this time and time again on TCO how much of a game changer Garv can be. The ability to flip support gear up or flip enemy gear down can change the direction of a match, People have advertised him with the Orb of Foresight and Flux Bauble in the past. Ever consider Garv and some Nexus Fuses? Or Girgeth Tars? How about making that stupid Mipedian Cactus a whole lot more useful? He holds a lot of possibility as such a hidden danger against any enemy.

For me it was definitely Vial of Liquid Thought. I didn't even know about Vial until I saw my first Neekwin deck in Army creations. Apparently it was all over the meta game at the time because Super cooled Rain decks were dominating masters. Its always been on the list of possible gear choices when building new decks, at least for me.

If we took this same idea and applied it to decks, I'd definitely have to go with the double Magmon E decks. Those things swept through 6v6 apprentice when first created and were the first good use of Flameblade of Seeryn. Before that deck, people usually didn't run gear protection. That deck surprised the apprentice game, and quickly sent people searching for Xerium Armors.

Preach, Blaz. Vial of Liquid Cruelty seemed so meh at first, then Neekwins and strike decks started tearing me to pieces with it. And those Magmon/Akkalbis... I've never seen Brimflame that powerful until then. Made me wish so, so many times that the site would magically support my Ginar'rash for more than just show.

One of the first for me was Galmadar. He's fairly tough in 6v6 masters but taking away te ability to heal or gain E can give you an dominating advantage against dagger/NFF decks. Once I saw people using them more often, I just made the switch and ran through those decks with only him. Add a Levatar for and they'll be sweatin' bullits. Smoooth

Since I was just reminded of this in a game yesterday...

    The Double Take Latest?cb=20110529104837

The day I realized the value of this dragon, it hit me like a Cyclone Slam... I assure you that the synergy between both cards is purely coincidence. Here was the mental conversation with younger me (we'll dub him "Pastjak").

Pastjak: "Wow, this card is dumb."
Me: "You're an idiot. This isn't a bad card, this is a build-around card."
Pastjak: "Uh, no. You fight six battles with him and then you tie because all the creatures are dead. If they have Song of Revival or something, you just lose. Card = fail."
Me: "You're the same fool who saw that Khorror doesn't need a ton of conjurers to work, and you don't see the possibility here? Did it ever occur to you that Gintanai alone doesn't have to be fighting all of your battles?"
    Pastjak: "Well--"
Me: "Furthermore, you should know that you can drop Trills of Diminution as he's landing the killing blow to dodge the tribute. You called yourself the 'Mugic man' or whatever dumb thing you said back then since you were Masters-exclusive, and yet you fail to see that."
    Pastjak: "But his stats..."
Me: "Are flat-out impressive. You see that power range? He's the only creature in the game with higher power than original LVB on average. Courage is second only to Blazvatan, speed is second to both Blazvatan and Ninren, and the energy lives up to today's standards. See his element pumping? That Cyclone Slam that just knocked epiphany into my head? He's dealing 50 damage with it. Don't give me the 'what if he loses his elements' when the only common sights of element hate are SoA and Numin. His courage is too high for SoA to dent it before he's mowed down, and air/earth 10 gives ample recovery if he regains both elements."
Pastjak: "Oh... well, I stand corrected."
Me: "I reiterate: you're an idiot."

Skithia, Gothos Spy showed herself to actually be an absolute beast one time when she was able to sweep three M'arrillians. Her stats are great, barring speed, and her ability is good too

Oh I remember those matches...mistimed my supercooled and caustic cascade and there went 3 chieftains/fluidmorphers. My double take moment was when I pulled a Mipedian Cactus and I didn't think too much because I already have creatures like Ere and Ninren. Although now I'm really considering using that in a mixed deck with gear glissando/garv...
