I pulled a Hivebringer and was adding it to my collections book, and I noticed that my older copy was a darker color. I compared a few other cards to older counterparts I had and a lot of the newer cards were not shaded the same. All are first edition, but for some reason, the newer batches are just...different.

This is interesting. For me it is the other way around. The older cards I had were a lighter color but I always assumed that was due to air exposure fading them. So I'm perplexed by this.

Re: Mildly interesting observation
Maybe because During Marrillian invasion card skins had some black at the bottom. Then when they reverted the card skin they could've made it lighter and therefore any printed after that point were lighter? Just a guess though.

There's also the different shades on Danians back in DoP, I got several Lore cards with different shades of brown, I think commons and uncommons were the same

Re: Mildly interesting observation
The prints for Chaotic cards have never been all too consistent. If I put a bunch of cards from one tribe together I can pick out at least four shades at any times. I'm still out in the boondocks right now, but when I'm at home I'll see if I can pinpoint a pattern between all the shades.
Unfortunately Chaotic cards were printed to show the first edition symbol long after they were actually first edition. I haven't tried before, but I think it's largely impossible to tell when a card is truly first edition. DoPS is the exception to that as the true first print cards were the only ones to ever have ripple foil.

A complete ripple foil collection would be near impossible to pull off these days anyway. You'll never pull a fresh one, and most people don't realize what they are / list it when selling them.
I'm the one who coined that term on the original forums years ago, and still consider myself a collector of them. It's not exactly a great collection, and I don't have any of the big 4, but it's still quite expansive since Secrets was the biggest set.
