Alright, so I've been sifting through the entirety of the Dawn of Perim set, and there are so many absurdities that just don't make sense, from both a lore and card balancing standpoint.

First off, Tangath Toborn - he's both an overworld general, and a super rare creature, but he's weaker than most other overworlders and has very limited usages. You'd think a general would be stronger than his soldiers.

Second, Xield. He's a dinosaur looking thing with a giant shield on his back, but he's not a guardian. Nope, he's an elementalist. The best part? He has a measly 35 base energy and no elements.

Third, wtf is with elementalists without elements? Another I've come across is Uro - why is a creature with 0 elemental ability classified as an elementalist?

    I don't even.

Don't forget the other counterparts to Flame Orb have the stats not corresponding to their now respective element as well as the fact that Only Heptadd, Maxxor, Tangath Toborn, Crawsectus, Slurhk, and Marquis Darini are the only ones who can make even just one of the 3 pointers like Lavalanche effective. I may have forgotten a few creatures so please don't kill me over it Whistle

I'm with hugh on this one. the thing you have to keep in mind is that dawn of perim was the first set there wasn't any set standard for element discipline combos attacks and overall it was just a different meta game. attacks rarely did consistent  damage and its was very difficult to get a whole team of 6 creatures that could utilize your entire attack deck. element attacks where worse because there where way to boost them (element X) while discipline attacks where harder to pull off constantly since many creatures stats where not the best. The one thing I don't quite like where the ultra rares they where just sooo much better that any other creatures there was no reason not to use them with there stats ( or elements in heptadd's case) they could get amazing coverage that most creatures struggle to get and since the guys where all loyal X-worlders there was not much reason to run danian and mipedian decks I understand that the Mipedian and Danian  got there own sets later but there kinda a joke in the first set, oh well.
all in all I think dawn of perim was a solid start for the game

In terms of tangeth the game and the show don't match up so many times its not even worth counting.

Tangath Toborn wasn't Unique or Loyal, so they balanced him out by giving him crap stats. He had a self-healing ability, two Elements shared with Maxxor, and a Mugic. Nothing great nowadays nor back in the day, but still something.

I highly doubt many Underworlders are the 'Guardian'-type. Not to mention Xield was created by Mommark who loves crazy things. Plus his low Energy probably just has something to do with the fact that he is like a turtle, hard-shell, squishy insides.

For the Elementalists without Elements. They could be Elementalists-in-training, scanned at that point after having their Elements drained, or more than likely in Uro's case. The guys at Chaotic didn't want to give him an Element for balancing issues. Having Surprise, Strike 5, and an Element probably would've sent his stats to the depths of the Underworld.

It was a money-making TCG first, wonderful creative world second.

Yeah, the balancing issues back then were horrible. Certain things were over-balanced especially compared to today. Having two elements back in the day made a Creature seem considerably better, but now two elements is basically considered the norm. Elements, Mugicians, Invisibility, Hive all seemed to have been reeled under control back then.
I was more disappointed that the Mipedians didn't get an Ultra Rare in the second pack and then the third pack when they finally did it didn't support the Invisible Mipedians we have come to know and love, but rather a new brand of Mipedians.
